Be careful, this sauce will soon be unavailable in supermarkets

Fans of Asian cuisine may be disappointed. An “unprecedented” shortage of Sriracha sauce is currently affecting much of the globe. Indeed, according to Bloomberg, this famous spicy sauce will become rare or even disappear from supermarket shelves for several months.

The reason ? Condiment maker Huy Fong Foods has been forced to suspend production of its signature hot sauces – sriracha, chili garlic and sambal oelek – due to a shortage of chili peppers. “Unfortunately, we can confirm that there is an unprecedented shortage of our products,” the company said in a statement.

The company explains this shortage by “an unexpectedly bad harvest of chilli in the spring” due to unfavorable weather conditions. “We look forward to a successful fall season and thank our customers for their patience and continued support during this difficult time,” Huy Fong Foods management added, as quoted by Bloomberg.

Sriracha sauce lovers have not failed to express their desolation on social networks, going so far as to speak of “the worst news of the year”. Others planned to stock up before the sauce completely disappeared from the shelves. Extreme weather conditions, supply chain issues due to the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have weighed on food production this year. Sriracha sauce is just the latest in a long list of foods in short supply around the world.
