Jacqueline Lorain, the wife of the former chef of the Côte Saint-Jacques in Joigny, has died

Jacqueline Lorain, the wife of the former three-star chef of the Côte Saint-Jacques, died on Friday June 10.

Her role, alongside her husband Michel, in transforming the Jovinian restaurant from a stopover on the holiday route into a gastronomic address renowned throughout the country, was important.

She was born on April 13, 1936 in Paris. She met her future husband when she was only 18 and he was 19. They married in 1957 when Michel returned from Algeria. A year later, they took over the inn run by Pauline, her mother-in-law. From this union were born two children: Jean-Michel in 1959 and Catherine in 1965.

This close-knit couple led the establishment in the race for the stars of the Michelin Guide. La Côte Saint-Jacques was awarded three stars in 1986. At the same time, they carried out the expansion of the hotel-restaurant.

If the kitchen was the domain of her husband, Jacqueline Lorain, mastering two foreign languages, held the room. But not only… “Sommelière emeritus, she had been by her own will, one of the very first women to invest in the very macho world of wine”, notes her son.

Michel Lorain died on July 22, 2021 after 65 years of marriage. His wife joined him less than a year later.
