On December 7, 2018, a few minutes after Jonathann Daval confessed to the murder of his wife, the judges agreed to leave him with Alexia’s parents and sister. No one knows what they said to each other.
We are December 7, 2018. Jonathann Daval is confronted with his in-laws. In tears, on his knees in front of his mother-in-law, who found the words to make him speak, the computer specialist reconsiders his initial confessions and admits in the office of the examining magistrate to having strangled to death his wife Alexia during a violent argument. A few minutes later, the in-laws of their daughter’s murderer ask to be left alone with him.
“It should never have existed, it existed with the agreement of the examining magistrate”, explains on BFMTV Randall Schwerdorffer, Jonathann Daval’s lawyer.
“A moment out of time”
In a forthcoming book I wanted her to shut up, the lawyer recounts this “exceptional scene”, this “timeless moment”. “It is a totally exceptional scene in the annals of the judiciary, continues Mr. Schwerdorffer. We were spectators that day of an extraordinary confrontation and this completely surreal scene. A scene unknown to the general public until then.
At the end of a corridor in the Besançon court, Jonathann Daval finds himself in a glazed room with his in-laws Isabelle and Jean-Pierre Fouillot, his sister-in-law and his brother-in-law, Stéphanie and Grégory Gay. Nobody attends this “family reunion”, not a magistrate, not a policeman, not a lawyer.
“I don’t know what they said to each other, I never asked Jonathann, it’s part of his totally private sphere, confides Me Schwerdorffer. Only they know what was said. It’s true that I would have liked to know.”
“A lot of people cried”
Words are exchanged, gestures too. “I have never seen the parents of victims want to talk, hug, cry together, I have never seen that in my 20-year career (…) and yet this scene existed”, insists the lawyer.
That day “many people cried, even professionals”.
Jonathann Daval was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Haute-Saône Assize Court for the murder of his wife Alexia. He had not appealed his conviction. According to his lawyer, his detention is taking place in good conditions.
