Extinct in the wild, three parrots from the Belgian animal park are taking part in an operation to reintroduce them into their former natural environment.

By Michel De Muelenaere
SIf the operation is a success, it will truly be a first. It will be the first time that man has succeeded in reintroducing a species of bird declared extinct in the wild. However, the chosen one does not weigh heavily: less than 400 grams while wet. This is the Spix’s macaw, a blue parrot, which in just over two centuries has gone from the status of a discovered species to that of an extinct species… This Saturday, eight birds which had been “trained” to survive in nature will be released in northeast Brazil. Twelve others should follow by the end of the year.
