Black mambas are fast, nervous, deadly venomous snakes that, when threatened, are very aggressive. They killed many Men and African myths exaggerate their characteristics until they take on the air of legends. For all these reasons, the black mamba is widely regarded as the deadliest snake in the world.
It is the longest venomous snake in Africa, reaching up to 4 meters in length, although the average is more around 2.5 meters. They are also among the fastest snakes in the world, moving at speeds of up to 20 kilometers per hour.
Contrary to what one might think, they don’t get their name not from the color of their skin, which tends to be olive or gray, but rather from the blue-black color of the inside of their mouths, which ‘they open when threatened.
Before the appearance of the antivenom specific to black mamba bites, these were almost always fatal, causing the death of their victim within 20 minutes. Unfortunately, this antivenom is not yet widely available in rural areas of the mamba’s range (savannahs and the rocky hills of southern and eastern Africa), and deaths caused by the black mamba remain frequent.
